I have lived in Northumberland Park, Tottenham for 30 years and have worked in the voluntary sector 20 years. During this time I have been lucky enough to become involved in a number of local projects and initiatives. I used to volunteer my time to work on the Playbus when my daughter was young and as a result of that became a member of the steering group responsible for building the Northumberland Park Women and Children’s Centre – recently renamed the Ilse Amlot Centre. I have worked in the Centre since it opened first as a playgroup assistant and then as an admin/finance officer
I was a director for Living Under One Sun for a number of years– a great project that has, among other activities, a community allotment in Millmead Road – where many of our members volunteer. It’s a fantastic site, well worth a visit.
I am really interested in the concept of Timebanking – I believe that by valuing everybody’s time and skills equally you help to promote a sense of self worth and build the community. Over time the sense of neighborliness and belonging has gone from many of our estates, including mine.
I am really looking forward to this new Timebanking year – our new home at the Winkfield Resource Centre means we can provide regular sessions in response to your suggestions, grow the Timebank and make an even bigger impact.
“If people feel part of community, they feel they have a stake in that community, then community immediately becomes more cohesive. Community cohesion lies at the heart of what makes a safe and strong community.” Edgar Khan – founder of Timebank
